The Essence Music Festival is the largest event honoring African American music and culture in the United States. This year’s festival features a star studded line-up including Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Alicia Keys, Keri Hilson, Charlie Wilson, Gladys Knight, Jill Scott, Monica, DJ Soul Sister, Raphael Saadiq, Trey Songz and so many more!

A Tribute to Earth Wind & Fire

Musicians Arvell & Company will be performing a Tribute to Earth Wind & Fire this summer at the Carl & Helene Mirowitz Performing Arts Center in St. Louis. It will take place June 18, 2010 from 7:30-9:30pm.

Held in a cabaret style setting, the band will be mixing up elements of African, Latin American, funk, soul, pop, rock, and jazz to bring you the sounds of Earth Wind & Fire. Arvell & Co. is led by Arvell Keithley and has been performing for almost three decades. Over the years he has had the opportunity to open for BB King, Gladys Knight, Redd Foxx, The Bacon Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, The O’Jays, Kool & The Gang, Lou Rawls, Slappy White and many others.

Arvell & Co is leading the revival of the Big Band sound and offers an extensive variety of music, performing as a four, six or nine piece band.

Earth Wind & Fire step in for Aretha Franklin at Jazz Fest

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, aka Jazz Fest, may be over, but some fans are still disappointed that one of the festival’s headliners–Aretha Franklin–canceled just 24 hours before her scheduled time to take the stage.

Luckily for the festival’s organizers Earth Wind & Fire were close to the event, playing another gig in state and were happy to fill the void left by the Queen of Soul.

No reports are out as to why Franklin canceled her performance.

Though the festival is over, there are still Earth Wind & Fire tickets available for the rest of their tour dates. The group is touring steadily throughout the U.S. from now to July 4 before going overseas through September.

Earth Wind & Fire To Be Inducted

It has been confirmed that Earth Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn, and Al McKay will be inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on June 17, 2010 in NYC. Other inductees include Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster and Johnny Mandel.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame “celebrates songwriters, educates the public with regard to their achievements, and produces a spectrum of professional programs devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.”

Earth Wind & Fire celebrates over 40 years in the music business earning more than 50 Gold and Platinum albums, 90 million albums worldwide, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Signature Governor’s Award, and being the first African American performers to sell out Madison Square Garden and the receive the MSG Gold Ticket Award, just to name a few.

Currently the group has scheduled performances in Europe and the US through the end of summer, so be sure to check your local listing for Earth Wind and Fire tickets.
